Materials & Manufacturing (MM) | Applied Enterprise Systems (aes)

Applied Enterprise Systems (AES) designs, develops and demonstrates integrated processes and technologies in the areas of sense and respond logistics and supply chain management. The AES department continuously teams with our sister departments – Complex Systems Monitoring and Automation Department and Embedded Hardware/Software Systems and Applications Department. The departments work together on all aspects of scientific and engineering challenges from low power sensors to enterprise level applications.  The team transitions successful processes and technologies to third parties to implement in production systems.

Our sense and respond logistics projects seek to make information collected by remote systems accessible and meaningful to decision makers, decision making systems, and transaction processing systems.  We develop innovative processes and technologies to assess, report and aggregate the health and status of vehicles operating on the farthest fringes of the enterprise.

Our supply chain management projects employ commercial enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications from Oracle and SAP since both are used by U.S. military services.  Example operational concept demonstrations include integrating supply and maintenance processes between military services, integrating external decision support systems with the ERP applications, and creating supply forecasts.

In addition, the team champions the use and improvement of open standards employed by sense and respond logistics and supply chain management.  We participate actively in the MIMOSA standards body to improve the Open Systems Architecture for Enterprise Application Integration (OSA-EAI) and the Open Systems Architecture for Condition Based Maintenance (OSA-CBM).
